The Story of the Rajin Cajun
This doesn't have anything to do with racing in Baja, but it's a special project to me, and this is a good place to share it. One of the most influencial men in my life was my grandad (paw-paw), Lester Maillet. Paw Paw was a hard core o'l Cajun from South Central Louisiana. He lived to hunt and fish, and was as tough as they come. When I was a kid, all he drove were old military jeeps. But in 1974, he bought a new Ford Bronco from Scallan Motors in Marksville. The next year, with the help of my parents, I bought my first car - a 1968 Ford Bronco. If it was good enough for Paw Paw, it was good enough for me. That started a love affair between me and the little bobtail 4x4's. I owned that '68 until my daughter was born. Joan and I even left our wedding in that old truck. I loved it. When my Paw Paw passed away, I bought his '74 from my Maw Maw. I drove it for several years, but she was really starting to show her age. I saved and planned, and finally pulled the trigger. With the help of another Bronco guy I met on classicbroncos.com, I found a guy to do a complete restoration of the o'l gal. Here's her story in pictures. I hope you enjoy, and I hope nothing I do to this truck will offend my paw paw. I miss him, and wish he were here to know my kids the way he knew me. He was a true Rajin' Cajun!
